On a physical level, generally whether standing or on the floor, the hip opening postures in external rotation help to work on the flexibility of the lower back. Many bodies are in hyper lordosis or hypo lordosis and these postures help to approach neutrality in the arch of the lower back. The more open the hips, the more the pelvis can go into retroversion and anteversion.
On the mental point, these postures tickle the second chakra named Svadhistana, the sacral chakra linked to emotions, desire and creativity. It is therefore normal that emotions are felt because in case of stress we tense our hip flexors but we forget to release them. Opening the hips therefore serves to mobilize this frozen energy and release it.
The postures in this sequence are offered with many variations by raising the foot using one or two bricks in order to accentuate the action of opening the hips and to physically memorize the sensations to let them infuse in the mental.
