Aside from maintaining better nervous balance, becoming aware of the spine, stiffness and blockages to relieve the back, and discomfort due to hormonal changes, the physiological benefits of yoga postures for pregnant women are numerous.
Here is a small, non-exhaustive list of these benefits: on a physical level, the postures activate blood circulation and oxygenation of cellular tissues and prevent heavy legs and varicose veins. The postures relieve minor pregnancy ailments such as back pain and sciatic nerve pain. They develop and preserve pelvic mobility for a better feeling during pregnancy and an easier delivery and prevent compression of the spine and forward distension of the abdominal muscles when the baby gains weight in the womb. The postures give awareness in the perineum and the body's center of gravity to move with flexibility and fluidity.
On a mental level, asanas balance the nervous system, promote a positive state of mind, and increase awareness of oneself, one's body image, and one's abilities. Yoga allows one to store endorphins and find a way to let go, relax, but also regain energy and give birth gently and consciously.
In this sequence, we practice basic standing postures using a chair to relieve the legs by stretching the hip flexors, psoas, and releasing the sciatic nerve. This facilitates hip mobility, allows for better pelvic tilt, and releases the lower back. The chair helps maintain balance and thus better focus on stretching.
