Because of our profession and because of the social networks on which we put a lot of images of ourselves or our aspirations, we can feel locked in the close relationship we have with our ego. We can feel dissonant with this because in yoga we seek to detach ourselves from our ego but we still need to show the students who follow us and attend our classes that we know things and that we know how to do things. We are there to teach the students something, but we can sometimes give an image of a person that we are not and maintain ego games that we do out of necessity in our work. Sometimes we don't like it, so we need to distinguish between what appeals to our ego and what doesn't. Working on the detachment of our ego during the postures and in many other circumstances are excellent exercises.
Our ego is like a capricious child who will always do everything to prevent us from facing things and accessing the truth. It is a child that gets restless, that creates movement and agitation, that will always find something to do, that will create realities that suit us to divert our attention from what we really need to see in front of us to be able to evolve, to become a better human.
The cocoa seed is a sacred seed for the Maya because it has a very strong symbolism in relation to the ego and the heart. The cocoa seeds must be cooked in order to be eaten and especially to be peeled. You have to bring fire to it, which is an element of light, to be able to remove the shell and the skin around the seed and to be able to eat the crunchy seed inside.
The Mayans say that the cocoa seed is our heart covered by its ego. The ego is this skin that we have to remove at some point to be able to access our heart and love, to be able to access something tender and edible, healthy and especially the truth.
Without light, it is impossible to access our ego just like the cocoa seed which we can't reach without roasting it first. We all have this shell that is the ego which is composed of our adventures, our fears, our life experiences, the stories we tell ourselves, but if we do not break this shell then we cannot access our heart, our self love, the depth of our being, the depth of who we are, the depth of our soul.
The light is brought by thoughts, by intentions, by the desire to seek the light and also by the acceptance of the shadow.
The ego, like a capricious child, every day gets agitated and arranges to divert our attention from what we have to face in order to evolve, to prevent our soul from evolving, to prevent our heart from opening to become a better person. To allow this to happen, we must be firmly prepared to put our ego aside by breaking the top layer, which requires a lot of humility and courage, because it is the ego that creates the fear. Healing can only be done through the heart. The ego will always create disillusionment in order to avoid self-work and introspection and that is why we must learn to put it aside to access more depth, more authenticity and more truth of who we are. We must accept to be taught by love.
It is a constant work of humility and teaching in the sense that it is accepting that we are constant students and that we can constantly bow to life. It is accepting that we do not know everything, it is accepting to learn and to be taught by life and by love.
The ego we all have and it is an excellent servant to forge an identity, to move forward in life, to go towards our goals but unfortunately it becomes very quickly the master. The ego is a very bad master but an excellent servant.
We must work on self-compassion to open our eyes to face our fears and to be able to heal and especially to grow. We need to bring the intention of wanting to evolve our soul to access the truth.
Yoga teaches us that we can be humble and teaches us courage every day by practicing it through its 8 branches. Yoga helps us to shed that layer of ego to live life.
