This week we open the whole front of the body with KAPOTOSANA , the pigeon posture. Kapota is a dove or a pigeon. In this posture the chest expands and swells like that of a pigeon which swells its crop, hence the name.
The posture tones the entire spine as it is largely supplied with blood. As the pelvis is stretched, the genitals are kept healthy. The diaphragm is lifted and this gently massages the heart and helps to strengthen it. The chest is wide open. It is essential to master Kapotasana before practicing more difficult back extension postures.
This backward extension opens and stretches the groins, hip flexors and quads, and also opens up the shoulders, chest and the entire front of the bust. It also helps improve posture because it aligns the spine. It strengthens the muscles of the lower back and the abdominals.
Kapotasana is an ideal posture for women who want to get pregnant because it centers the uterus and stimulates all the organs in the abdominal area.
Kapotasana in full posture (hands on heels and top of the head on the ground) is a difficult posture, so you should try to practice it as often as possible. In this posture, the breathing becomes very fast and short because the diaphragm is fully contracted. You must therefore learn to calm breathing by staying a few seconds and then gradually stay a whole minute in the posture.
